According to the Daily Mail, Crystal Palace was relegated from the UEFA Cup to the UEFA Cup due to violating UEFA's regulations on ownership of multiple clubs. They have appealed the matter to the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
CAS announced that it will hear the case on August 8 and announced the ruling results on August 11. Crystal Palace hopes to overturn the decision and appeal Nottingham Forest and Lyon's decision to enter the UEFA Cup. Previously, Nottingham Forest replaced Crystal Palace in the European Cup. Nottingham Forest officials will send a legal team to Switzerland for the hearing.
As the FA Cup champion, Crystal Palace was moved out of the UEFA Cup because Lyon, owned by American businessman John Tuctor, has entered the event and ranked higher in the domestic league last season. Tuctor's Eagle Football Holdings also owns a 43% stake in Crystal Palace, which UEFA believes violates their rules. Crystal Palace is expected to deny Tuctor has influence in its club because his company has only 25% of the vote. Tuctor has sold his shares to another American businessman, Woody Johnson.
Crystal Palace also claims that UEFA has double standards because they believe Nottingham Forest has received extra time to comply with the rules, and that Crystal Palace must meet the standards by March 1. Crystal Palace hopes UEFA discloses relevant documents to prove that the two teams are treated differently. Nottingham Forest owner Evanellos Marinakis placed the team in a trust on April 29, when there was a risk that he might enter the Champions League with his Greek side Olympiacos. The European Cup playoff draw will be held next week, and Crystal Palace still needs to participate in the event. The first leg is scheduled to be held on August 21.
